Attention Home Owners ! Please check with mortgage company to see if your taxes are paid.

I was surprised to read the other day, that some mortgage companies that escrow taxes have not paid the Real Estate taxes on behalf of the clients.

Unsuspecting home owners may not realize that the taxes have not been paid. This may be due to mortgage company being sold to another company or other reasons but home owners should make sure their taxes are paid.

If you purchased last year and the tax collector sends you the bill , and the bank is escrowing for taxes, please forward the bill to your mortgage company as soon as possible and follow up to make sure they have received it .

Because of the sub prime crisis there is crisis in the mortgage industry and people are being laid off and they may be short handed.

You can call your mortgage company or tax collector and verify when taxes were paid for 2007.You will need the information while filing your tax returns.

When you read about events please check the year for the event as some people find information a year later and think it is for that year. . The posts remain online even after the event.

Gita - This is excellent information.  It would be terrible to find out there is a tax lien on your property.  Usually the bank will send you some sort of a document indicating it has been paid, at least my bank does.

Jennifer, Thanks for the comments. Banks are supposed to do it .I was shocked to read about some liens because they failed to pay the taxes.

Gita, that could be a major problem if taxes weren't paid. Then "someone" has to pay the penalty.

It is the responsibilty of home owner to make sure taxes re paid if the mortgage company has gone out of business or is sold to another company.
