Philadelphia, Bucks and Montgomery Counties Real Estate. Tips for home buyers, home sellers by Gita Bantwal,Realtor at Re/Max Centre Realtors.: Achieving balance between personal and business life.

Achieving balance between personal and business life.

I am thankful for my job. One of the reasons I love being a real estate agent is because I can have a flexible schedule. However in order to be successful we have to work long hours and most of us work seven days a week.

Most of the home buyers in my market area want to see homes on weekends. Many buyers like to see homes on holidays as they are not working that day.

When I first got my license I used to attend free seminars about real estate  by motivational speakers .

One of the speakers, (unfortunately I do not remember who )  said, when you are at end of your life you will not regret not going on a listing appointment but will regret if you missed an important family celebration." I was young and was not thinking of end of life but I realized that I may have many occasions when I will have to choose between  personal and business activity..

Here are some events :

I had buyers who looked at many homes. They finally narrowed it to two homes. The wife liked one house and the husband liked another. The wife said her mother would be visiting them for Mother's day and she would like to show her the two homes and get her opinion. When I called to set up appointments, one seller turned down the appointment as it was Mother's day and she was having family over. I showed one house and her mother liked it . It was the house the wife liked ayway so they bought that house. The other agent asked me " Are you working on Mother's day?

I said I am not working all day. I can spare couple of hours before brunch  to show the house and celebrate with my family after the showing. The buyers were going to sign the contract the following day so I knew it would not take long.

We have a large circle of friends. There are invitations for most weekends.  We do not accept invitations to many events if they are during the day unless it is important. I used to find it difficult to say, ' No', but a friend told me , , 'if you invite people to lunch on a week day, they are not going to take the day off, to come. It is the same with your  real estate job. The weekend is your work day. You can take a day off if it is important but your friends will understand.

I used to go to India every year to stay with my parents for a month. Myhusband and son came for two weeks but I stayed for two more weeks. It was in the winter when busines  is slow here. I know I lost some business during that time but I do not regret it at all. I wish my parents were stll alive. I miss them. I had an agent who covered for me so my clients did not suffer. I also had many prospective  sellers  who waited for me to come back to list their home. If I had a listing when I was away I gave my clients my parents phone number and said they could call me collect. They also had my cell phone number but sometimes it would be difficult to get signals.

The quote that inspires me is this quote by  First Lady Barbara Bush.

Barbara Bush told the graduating class at Wellesley College in her commencement address :

"At the end of your life you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal.

You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child or a parent. "

Hi Gita,
Barbara Bush was a wise woman and so are you.  There can be balance but sometimes you have to make choices.  We must choose wisely as we go through life.

It's hard to decline appointments when you are new to the business. It gets easier as we become more skilled in negotiating our schedule. Most buyers and sellers will be flexible and understanding, especially on holidays and last minute appointments.

Good morning Gita Bantwal,

I'm so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post in her "Ah-ha" moments for the week. I loved your post as it is so true the trickiest things about this business is getting the work/personal balance correct. I always schedule my family gatherings then schedule clients around the activities I have planned with family. Today we are taking Beautiful Beckett to the Nutcracker. I had a client who wanted to see 2 house today. I told her what I had planned and we saw them yesterday. She completely understood!

When I stopped trying to balance work and personal and merged the two together, my business took off big time. I think, personally, it is a mistake to think the two can be equally balanced when you're reaching for the stars. Almost all of my friends are my clients or associates. There is a reason people say it is lonely at the top.

I will say it is the complete opposite in Hawaii. I am discovering how much fun it is to hang out with people who don't talk about real estate!

That is a great photo of you and your dad, Gita!

My entire family was (is) in the business and almost completely achieved both business and personal aspects nearly simultaneously. That being said I have pushed my family life to the forefront and it's been so, so much more enjoyable that way.

A very important life lesson here, Gita! Family should always come first...sometimes that actually does mean being away from them because you are making the money to support them. Things like time spent with your parents when you had someone taking care of business back home is time well spent!
