I am thankful for my job. One of the reasons I love being a real estate agent is because I can have a flexible schedule. However in order to be successful we have to work long hours and most of us work seven days a week.
Most of the home buyers in my market area want to see homes on weekends. Many buyers like to see homes on holidays as they are not working that day.
When I first got my license I used to attend free seminars about real estate by motivational speakers .
One of the speakers, (unfortunately I do not remember who ) said, when you are at end of your life you will not regret not going on a listing appointment but will regret if you missed an important family celebration." I was young and was not thinking of end of life but I realized that I may have many occasions when I will have to choose between personal and business activity..
Here are some events :
I had buyers who looked at many homes. They finally narrowed it to two homes. The wife liked one house and the husband liked another. The wife said her mother would be visiting them for Mother's day and she would like to show her the two homes and get her opinion. When I called to set up appointments, one seller turned down the appointment as it was Mother's day and she was having family over. I showed one house and her mother liked it . It was the house the wife liked ayway so they bought that house. The other agent asked me " Are you working on Mother's day?
I said I am not working all day. I can spare couple of hours before brunch to show the house and celebrate with my family after the showing. The buyers were going to sign the contract the following day so I knew it would not take long.
We have a large circle of friends. There are invitations for most weekends. We do not accept invitations to many events if they are during the day unless it is important. I used to find it difficult to say, ' No', but a friend told me , , 'if you invite people to lunch on a week day, they are not going to take the day off, to come. It is the same with your real estate job. The weekend is your work day. You can take a day off if it is important but your friends will understand.
I used to go to India every year to stay with my parents for a month. Myhusband and son came for two weeks but I stayed for two more weeks. It was in the winter when busines is slow here. I know I lost some business during that time but I do not regret it at all. I wish my parents were stll alive. I miss them. I had an agent who covered for me so my clients did not suffer. I also had many prospective sellers who waited for me to come back to list their home. If I had a listing when I was away I gave my clients my parents phone number and said they could call me collect. They also had my cell phone number but sometimes it would be difficult to get signals.
The quote that inspires me is this quote by First Lady Barbara Bush.
Barbara Bush told the graduating class at Wellesley College in her commencement address :
"At the end of your life you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal.
You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child or a parent. "
When you read about events please check the year for the event as some people find information a year later and think it is for that year. . The posts remain online even after the event.
